Put Muse to Work

A workshop by AITP at Texas A&M

Put Muse to work on your semester

Give this 90 minutes and Muse will check Canvas for you every morning, ask how your work is going before it slips, and message you when an internship that fits your resume shows up.

  1. Muse, Wednesday 8:00 AM

Two things are due in the next 48 hours. The ISTM 310 case write-up is due tonight at 11:59 PM, and ACCT 229 quiz 4 closes Thursday at 10:00 AM. New since yesterday: a MGMT 363 discussion post, due Friday.

  2. Muse, Thursday 6:00 PM

Checking in on your analytics project. The dashboard draft is due Monday and I haven’t heard about it yet. What did you finish this week, and is the dataset still holding you up?

  3. Muse, Friday 5:00 PM

One new match today: a technology risk internship in Houston for summer 2027. It fits your SQL and Tableau work. It asks for a 3.2 GPA, which your resume doesn’t list.

Examples of what Muse will send you.

Before you start

about 10 minutes

Three things to do before Part 1.

  1. Step 1: Open Muse next to this guide

Open muse.ai in a second window and sign in. You’ll copy messages here and send them there.

  2. Step 2: Test that Muse can reach you

Send this now. The test message should arrive while you work on Part 1.

Send me a test message in two minutes that says "Notifications work." Then tell me where your messages show up when I don't have Muse open, and what I need to turn on to get them.

  3. Step 3: Have these ready

Part 1

Deadlines from Canvas

about 25 minutes

Muse reads your Canvas calendar every morning and messages you when something is close, new or changed.

  1. Step 1: Copy your calendar feed link

In Canvas, open Calendar. At the bottom right, choose Calendar Feed and copy the link.

Treat this link like a password. Anyone who has it can read your calendar.

  2. Step 2: Fill in your details

    Never saved on this page.

  3. Step 3: Send the prompt

I want you to track my assignments using my Canvas calendar feed: your Canvas feed link My time zone is America/Chicago.

Read the feed now and show me everything due in the next 14 days, grouped by course. Include the due date, the exact time, and a link to the assignment when the feed has one. Flag anything unclear, like an item with no due time.

Every day at 8:00 AM, refresh the feed and check it again.

Message me when something is due within 48 hours, when a new assignment appears, or when a deadline changes. If nothing needs my attention, don't message me.

When I tell you I finished something, stop reminding me about it. The calendar doesn't show whether I submitted, so don't assume either way.

Tell me what you set up, when the next check runs, and where your message will arrive. If you can't read or refresh the feed, say what's blocking you.

1 blank left to fill in

  4. Step 4: Check Muse’s work

Compare the list against Canvas. Then tell Muse about something you already turned in:

I already turned in the week 6 quiz. Stop reminding me about it.

  5. If something didn’t work
    Muse can’t open the link

Paste the link into your browser to download an .ics file. Attach it and send:

Here is my Canvas calendar as a file. Use it in place of the link and set up everything else the same way.

The times are off by five or six hours

The feed lists times in UTC. Convert every time to my time zone and show me the list again.

Part 2

Check-ins that ask you first

about 20 minutes

Muse builds a plan for one thing you’re working toward, asks for updates, and adjusts when things change.

  1. Step 1: Pick something real

What should Muse follow up on?
  2. Step 2: Describe it

  3. Step 3: Send the prompt

Help me stay on top of this project. Project: project name What has to be finished: the deliverable Deadline: deadline My part: your part Done so far: what’s done What's stuck: what’s stuck, or nothing yet

Create a simple tracker with milestones, a date for each one, its status, and my next action.

Every Tuesday and Thursday at 6:00 PM (America/Chicago), message me to ask for an update. Ask what I finished, what's blocked, and what I'll do next. Then update the plan with my answer.

If a milestone is coming up and you haven't heard from me about it, ask. If I don't reply, record "no update" instead of assuming I did nothing. Keep each check-in to a few lines.

Show me the plan and tell me when the next check-in is.

6 blanks left to fill in

  4. Step 4: Reply with a change

Send an update with some bad news in it and watch the plan change.

I finished the research, but my teammate's dataset is two days late. Update the plan.

  5. If something didn’t work
    The plan didn’t change

Show me the plan again and point out what changed because of my last update.

    That’s too many check-ins

Check in once a week instead, on Sunday at 6:00 PM.

Part 3

An internship watch

about 25 minutes

Muse reads your resume, agrees a search profile with you, then checks for new openings every weekday.

  1. Step 1: Say what you’re looking for

  2. Step 2: Attach your resume and send this

I've attached my resume. I graduate in graduation month and year and I'm looking for internships starting start term. Locations I'd consider: locations.

Read the resume and propose a search profile: the roles that fit, the skills my resume supports, and my experience level. Separate must-haves from preferences. Only count qualifications that are on the resume.

Before you finalize it, ask me about anything that would change the search, such as remote work, industries I want or want to avoid, and eligibility requirements.

Show me the profile and wait for my corrections before you search.

3 blanks left to fill in

  3. Step 3: Fix the profile

Answer Muse’s questions and correct anything that’s off. For example:

Drop the project management roles and add IT audit and data analytics. I'm not open to relocating outside Texas.

  4. Step 4: Start the search

Use that profile to find openings now. Start with employer career pages and give me up to 5 strong matches. For each one, show the employer, role, location, application link, the posted date if you can find it, and why it fits my actual experience. Flag requirements I may not meet.

Treat these as the baseline. Then search again every weekday at 5:00 PM (America/Chicago).

Message me only when you find a new matching opening. Don't repeat a role I've already seen, even if it shows up on another site. Check that a posting is still open before you send it. If you can't find a posting date, say "first found today" instead of "posted today."

Keep a tracker of roles found, saved, dismissed and applied to. Search and tell me. Don't submit applications or contact employers for me.

Confirm the schedule and list any sources you couldn't access.

Muse searches on a schedule, so you hear about a posting at the next check, not the minute it goes up.

  5. Step 5: Check Muse’s work

Open one of the links. Then dismiss a result and say why:

Dismiss the second one. I don't want sales roles. Use that for future searches.

  6. If something didn’t work
    Muse couldn’t read the resume

Paste the resume text into the message in place of the attachment.

    A posting has closed

That posting is closed. Open every link and confirm it's still accepting applications before you show it to me.

    Nothing matched

Which of my requirements ruled out the most roles? Show me what I'd see if I relaxed it.

Stay in control

about 10 minutes

Make sure you can see, change and stop everything you just set up.

  1. Step 1: See what’s running

Show me every recurring task you're running for me, when each one runs next, and how I pause or change it.

  2. Step 2: Change one thing

Move my assignment check to 7:30 AM.

Don't message me between 11:00 PM and 7:00 AM.

Pause the internship search until January 4.
